When I started this blog I should have put in a little bit more description about myself. Maybe then these long stretches where I seem to vanish would make more sense. One thing that you should know is that I'm a bit lost in many ways. I've been trying to find out where I want to live, what I want to do, what I want to write, and most importantly what mixture of all of this will make me and my family the most content.
The last few months I've been experimenting with all of these elements. We moved, rather suddenly, to a new area, so far it looks like it might be a semi-comfortable fit. I've tried to do a bit of non-romance writing but it is hard to switch to and from different genres, or at least it is for me. I'm also looking for a new job, not only because we moved but because the last job certainly wasn't making me happy. Now add to all of this that I've had lots of company at my house, still do in fact.
Sure those are all just excuses but I still think that they are pretty good ones. I'll get back into posting more often, I promise. And this time you'll get to see more of me than you have in the past. This blog will hopefully be a bit more about who I am instead of who I was trying to be. More on that soon!

I took a creative writing class at the University of Montana where we had to purposefully write like other authors...the Apostle Paul among them. It was quite interesting. I think it's a healthy thing and keeps a writer growing to write different genres. As you probably know, I write speeches, not only for myself but for others. I believe that class helped me greatly match my writing to a person's personality. Also, I'm enjoying reading your blog again.
ReplyDeleteGreat exercise Steve. I had to do something like that for history but instead of trying to think about how another person would write it was why a person would develop that style of writing. It was a way to get through the author and to the real history of what happened. It is a great idea for writers to try and get into the heads of everyone else. Thanks Steve for still being a fan even when we go silent for so long!
ReplyDeleteI look every day to see if you or Kris has written something. Your history exercise would have been most interesting. Generally people do things for their own purposes...not for others. Is that what you discovered?
ReplyDeleteYes but it was also revealing about the history of the time that it was written. What we were 'filtering out' was the bias of the writer and the time that he was in. Very fun! Yup, I'm a geek.
