There is something so romantic about men and women from the past. Think about the wild appeal that James Dean, Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe still have in our popular culture. Now let's go back even farther. Imagine the grandeur of Cleopatra, stare into the eyes of Mona Lisa, or take in a mosaic of Alexander the Great. Maybe Abraham was hot too and the bible was just a bit too prudish to mention it, I mean he did have two wives after all.
We hear enough about the modern day hotties for me so I'm going to focus on the kind that you don't find anymore. The ones that aren't likely to be on the cover of any magazines, except maybe National Geographic.
To start off this week I've brought back Todd Karns. You may have never heard his name but most of you have seen his handsome baby face with that off kilter smile or at least can recall his famous line at the end of It's a Wonderful Life, “To my big brother George, the richest man in town!"
I love actors like him that were supposed to be little more than a bit character but their charm brings them to the foreground where they can't be ignored. He scores double points when you add in the uniform. No girl can turn down a man like that!
Next Week: The woman who conquered the heart of France's first Emperor.
Hi Lindsay! How about Gene Kelley and Fred Astaire? Love those guys! Very charming.

ReplyDeleteI'm a Cary Grant girl through and through. One time I was talking about him so much that the guy I was dating started to get jealous!
ReplyDeleteHi Penny! I plan to make this a weekly update with a fun mix of old movie stars and historical figures. Gene Kelley and Fred Astaire are likely to pop up at some point as I do love both of them.
ReplyDeleteSteve-Very true. That's why I wanted to bring out some unusual candidates, I think you'll like next week's because it does have a bit of history included. Oh and I posted that Fabio pic just for you and Randy! Hehe, sorry guys!
ReplyDeleteD.L.-That poor boyfriend! No man should try to compare himself against Cary Grant...sigh. He is my favorite classic movie star. Charm, humor, looks, and a humble background that he rose above; ever hear of Archibald Alexander Leach? Yup that man is the whole package!
ReplyDeleteHaha yea if you pay attention in His Girl Friday his character mentions Archie Leach!
ReplyDeleteWas that a picture of Fabio? I thought you found an old college picture of mine.
ReplyDeleteWell, it definately isn't a college picture of mine. I had a perm so I had almost shoulder length curly blond hair.
ReplyDeleteFinally started on Sense and Sensability. It's pretty slow going. I'm having a hard time getting past the old writing style. I have to read and re-read and think so much about what the writer is trying to say. It's getting a little easier but so far it's reading like a literature class novel that I "have" to read.
I need mystery, suspense, and preferably bloodshed or the chance thereof, to keep my interest. I do like the plot of the mother trying to take care of the three daughters and where their means of support is coming from. The "evil" daughter-in-law is pleasantly distasteful as well. I'm hoping things will get more interesting.
Ahem.

Randy-Well even if you end up hating the book, I'm really excited that you gave it a try. I've also decided to shake things up a bit...since the books I wanted to do are perhaps a bit dry for you and Steve. If you decide to try again next month I promise that you will find more action, adventure, and a whole lot of mystery, although perhaps not in a traditional sense. You certainly will be familiar with the plot though.
ReplyDeleteSteve-shaking my head, that's all that I can do!
ReplyDeleteROUS-ahem...?! That book does not count and there is a reason why I didn't invite you to the read along this month...because I knew you'd read that one instead!
